Kerala on Saturday reported the highest single-day spike in new cases of the novel coronavirus, second day in a row. As many as 42 fresh cases of infection were reported from the state on Friday, followed by 62 more cases on Saturday.
With this development, the state now has 275 active cases of Covid-19. Three patients also recovered from the infection between Friday night and Saturday evening, pushing the total number of recoveries in Kerala to 515
Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja Teacher told media outlets that the state now has 37 containment zones, with the addition of nine more hotspots on Saturday.
Among the new patients, Palakkad topped with 19 cases, followed by Kannur with 16 and Malappuram with 8. For the first time, Kerala reported a massive spike in the number of Covid-19 cases among healthcare professionals with seven of them testing positive for the infection. Out of the 62 new infections, 18 are non-residents and 31 are from the other states while 13 patients caught the infection from contacts.
With infections rising in the state, around 91,084 people have been placed under surveillance and 90,416 of them have been directed to adhere to either home or institutional quarantine.
Kerala government has reviewed the situation and directed all district administrations to step up surveillance against those under home quarantine. The state anticipates more new cases over the next two weeks with more flights and trains scheduled to arrive in the state.
